SIBIU CITY
Romania is one of the large countries of Europe (the size of the United Kingdom or roughly half of France), with a population of approx. 22 million inhabitants. Often compared to a
"Latin island in a Slav sea", Romania features a unique familiar
feeling in Eastern Europe: its language of a Latin origin, the Latin alphabet
(quite rare in this part of Europe) and moreover the Latin temperament and
friendliness of its people - all make of Romania a place where most visitor
feel very comfortable.
The city of Sibiu is one of the most important cities in Transylvania with a remarkable economic
development potential. Set in the Cibin Depression, the city is near to Fagaras
Mountains (about. 20 km), Cibin Mountains (12 km), and Lotrului Mountains
(about 15 km), which border the depression in the southwestern part.
Having 155000
permanent inhabitants and 25000 temporary inhabitants (mainly students), the
city community is made up of various ethnic groups. The large majority of the
population is Romanians (94%). There are also many small communities in Sibiu, the Germans represents around 2%. They are descendents of the German settlers who
emigrated from area of today Luxembourg and Rhine Valley (Germany) in 17th century. Hungarians, Roma and a very small Jewish community
also coexist here, all of them contributing to the city life with their
specific cultural influences.
Sibiu is one of
the most prosperous cities in Romania, and also receives one of the highest
rates of foreign investment in the country.
Sibiu has always been perceived as a cultural city due to the secular traditions and the
artistic and cultural heritage of the city and its surroundings. Most of the
buildings, squares, towers and bastions of the city witness a history which
begins eight and a half centuries ago, when the colonists speaking dialects of
German founded the dwelling. Sibiu has a total of 9 museums grouped around two
major complexes. The most famous is Brukenthal Museum.
Sibiu is a compact city, with relatively short distances between extremities. It is
recommended that one visits the old city on foot due to the short distances and
the beautiful local architecture. The local public transportation in Sibiu is ensured by Tursib.
